Pattern 47-52/52

Like this year 2015, also my pattern challenge of the year is coming to its end. And my final patterns are a collection I have developed last month, in Chelsea’s Challenge of the Textile Design Lab. The theme was a WGSN trend for spring/summer 2017 called Tidal Beachcomber, with surface patterns that are reminiscent of… Read More

Pattern 46/52

I designed my pattern for this week for the Spoonflower contest Moon Phases. It is another pattern from my Mallorca holiday and was created under the influence of the full moon there, right in front of our balcony: I like circles and circle-based designs and this geometric pattern came together in Illustrator: Head over to… Read More

Pattern 45/52

My pattern of the week is another variation of the hibiscus theme from last week. I also designed it on holiday on Mallorca and used photos of hibiscus flowers I came across during our stay. I experimented with blur modes, pixelation and also rendered the flowers in some ways digitally. The pattern in the top-left… Read More

Pattern 44/52

Being on the island of Mallorca those past two weeks, right in front of our hotel, I saw a lot of pink hibiscus. I am not such a big fan of those flowers and find them a tad overused in all kinds of tropical designs (which I had a lot of time to study on… Read More

Pattern 43/52

Last month I was invited by the creative online agency jovoto to join their Textile Orbit – you are given monthly briefs from a textile supplier and trend reports by Promostyl and there is the chance of your patterns being licensed. For this week’s pattern I was inspired by an “underwater trend” and used an… Read More

Pattern 42/52

This week’s pattern was inspired by a tutorial in the Textile Design Lab, where I became a member in September – highly recommendable! It started out with some watercolour playtime in my studio painting all kinds of stripes: I painted stripes on watercolour paper and also on this strange yupo paper again (which took about… Read More

Pattern 41/52

A simple before-bed doodle in my sketchbook became the basis for this week’s pattern. Circles of different sizes, some felt markers and then I put this sketch into Photoshop, put it into a repeat and added a darker background: It is called “bacteria night party” and is my submission for the recent Spoonflower contest themed… Read More

Pattern 40/52

My pattern of the week was a submission for the Spoonflower design contest Pop Art Cookies. Pop Art rang a bell for me and I decided to update my Soft Pop pattern that I designed during this year’s Make it in Design Summer School. To make it more fun for me, I used a lot… Read More

Pattern 39/52

This week’s theme for sketching and my pattern-making totally naturally popped up – mushrooms! When I went for a little jog last Sunday I saw loads of them having appeared overnight. Mushrooms are so much associated with autumn/fall and are such a big part of my childhood memories that my mushroom gathering instinct was instantly… Read More

Pattern 38/52

Drawing and painting in my sketchbook is mostly just for my personal fun, exploration and relaxation. Rarely I sketch with a particular pattern-to-be in mind. But then, when I look at my sketches again after a while, they still may become patterns. I drew this watercolour sketch in late August in my mother’s garden at… Read More

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‚Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?‘ Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
― Marianne Williamson

Would you have guessed that I painted these flowers digitally, solely on the iPad? While most digital artists prefer Procreate, I love Adobe Fresco for its unpredictable watercolour brushes which bring much of the beauty and magic of real watercolours 🎨💫

For those of you who are interested in trying digital watercolour painting on the iPad I have a whole beginner class on @skillshare on this topic where we will paint crocuses in the snow, a little harbinger of spring. You can find the link to the class in my bio linktree ⬆️ It also gives you a month on Skillshare for free, with access to all my classes and thousands more.
